Ground Motion Visualization (GMV) is an animation-based EarthScope data product that illustrates how seismic waves travel away from an earthquake location by animating the normalized recorded wave amplitudes at each seismometer location, using colored markers. The color of each marker depicts the amplitude of the vertical ground motion, as detected by the station’s seismometer and normalized to its peak amplitude. The color changes as waves of differing amplitude travel past the seismometer. The blue indicates downward ground motion while red represents upward ground motion with darker colors indicating larger ground motions (Figure 1).

To produce the GMV animations, time series data are requested from all available stations for either LHZ or BHZ channels. The seismic data are then QC'ed, bandpass filtered between periods of 100s to 500s (0.002 Hz to 0.01 Hz), and normalized to their maximum amplitudes. The normalized traces are sliced at regular intervals and their amplitudes are color-coded and used for animation.

The GMV animation consists of a rotating globe with the earthquake epicenter marked by a red circle, 🔴, and the station locations shown by filled circles. The shaded regions (if present) represent the areas for which the GMV data are not downloaded yet. As the seismic waves travel away from the earthquake location, the globe follows waves to the selected region along the great circle path (shown by - - -). The animation in the unshaded regions depicts the propagation of the P, or primary wave, S, or secondary wave, and the Rayleigh waves, a type of surface wave, as expanding circles. The P and S times are from the ak135 travel times and the Rayleigh wave slowness is selectable and defaults to 28.5 sec/deg.
