Now onto the fun stuff. You can now download your favorite RINEX files and other data right in the browser. You simply need to authenticate yourself (it's the law these days!) so we know who is grabbing our data and then make selections and package up your files in one or more zip file bundles that download using the browser, rather than scripts run on your local machine. Woohoo! `32:T548,post_9_07_2022 = md` --- September 7, 2022 ### Hello, Web Assembly The first of many Web Assembly focused notebooks to come from the NSF GAGE Facility (formerly UNAVCO) is this little proof of concept notebook created by Brooks Mershon and Henry Berglund. A user can upload a RINEX (Receiver INdependent EXchange) file, which is a raw bit of ASCII data encoding observations from a GNSS receiver out in the field somewhere. This uploaded RINEX file is parsed and a JSON object is produced which allows us to immediately inspect and visualize statistics contained in an observation file. Big deal! Here's the cool part. The code that handles parsing RINEX and creating a JSON file was written by Berglund in [Go](https://go.dev/) and was being used as a command line tool until we decided to compile that code as a Web Assembly module to allow all of that beautiful functionality to run in the browser! It took a little bit of digging in the community to undrstand how to succesfully set up a Web Assembly Go module in the Observable environment, but now we feel we are off to the races. Arbitrary libraries written in C++ and Go for starters are now on the menu for incorporating high performance libraries into the browser environment via Web Assembly. It is common when perusing a certain slack channel at the NSF GAGE Facility (formerly UNAVCO) to see a discussion blowing up around a recent earthquake, with a frenzied and excited proliferation of data pouring in from many staff members that usually results in at least a few people offering up a specific list of stations that can be used to analyze an earthquake. We decided to rewrite the [Data Archive Interface](https://www.unavco.org/data/dai/) on this new fangled platform in an effort to prepare ourselves to make data discovery tools in a way that allows rapid prototyping and iteration as the fundamentals of how the NSF GAGE Facility (formerly UNAVCO) manages its data evolves over the coming years. Observable provides a platform for our engineers to quickly test out ideas as they relate to creating front-end user-facing web interfaces. We like to focus on supporting our scientific community here at the NSF GAGE Facility and when we see a better tool come along, we are more than willing to try it out if it helps us do a better job of supporting research in geodesy and related fields. Current functionality of our DAI notebook: - WHAT: Restrict your search for GNSS/GPS data based on metadata properties, such as Receiver, Antenna, and Radome type and the type of data products you are looking for, such as RINEX 2, RINEX 3, and daily position files from research insitutions that ingest raw data and analyze it for you! - WHEN: Search for stations with data in a given date range and sample interval. - WHERE: Draw polygons on a map to pick geodetic locations that you wish to include in your data download. This is handy when you are looking to quickly find data in response to an earthquake event that occured in a known location whether it be yesterday or a decade in the past. - Review files that will be downloaded over FTP. Yes, for now we are stuck with FTP downloads. This will change soon enough, but this tool makes the download process as easy as possible. Choose your data, download a *small* zip file cotaining scripts and a manifest, start your downloads, and go have a cup of coffee or two. - Sharable links. We are trying to make our data easy to access. Since we love Observable as a platform and know we can build larger applications with Observable notebooks (e.g. rewriting our data archive interface tool) we figure we can start by creating some of the fundamental building blocks on which our tools will be built so that larger applications can be built by us *and by you*! Big questions are often answered by asking many smaller questions, and in that spirit we are aiming to make big tools out of little tools on the web.
