31:T513,md`# About the contest This February, we [invited](https://observablehq.com/@observablehq/black-history-month-dataviz-contest) the Observable community to celebrate Black History Month and Black excellence in data visualization by participating in our first Black History Month DataViz Contest! We asked members of the Observable community to submit a notebook that: - provides insight into some aspect of Black history/culture, - uses data to advocate for racial justice for the Black community, and/or - is directly inspired by the [work of W.E.B. Du Bois](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/first-time-together-and-color-book-displays-web-du-bois-visionary-infographics-180970826/) or another Black data practitioner. The Observable team selected 5 notebooks from the submissions we received, choosing those which we felt used data visualization in interesting, thorough, & original ways to provide insights into the struggle for racial equity and celebrate the accomplishments of the Black community. Each winning author's contribution is rewarded with a $100 USD prize package: - A copy of [W.E.B.
