Territorial greenhouse gas emissions in the UK fell by 44% between 1990 and 2019. Much of this drop was the result of a declining reliance on coal in the energy sector. Over the same period transport emissions fell by 5%. Since 2016 the transport sector has emitted the largest amount of greenhouse gas.

Transport accounted for 27% (122 MtCO₂e) of territorial greenhouse gas emissions in 2019 with 91% (111 MtCo₂e) of these emissions coming from road vehicles. Passenger cars contributed to 61% (68 MtCO₂e) of road vehicle emissions in 2019 which is equivalent to 15% of total territorial emissions.
