Maybe surprisingly, these are 3D renders derived from moon orbiter data, not successive images captured through a ground-based telescope: > Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter ([LRO](https://lunar.gsfc.nasa.gov/)) has been in orbit around the Moon since the summer of 2009.
